In a surprising turn of events, Wayne Mackintosh has been appointed as the new manager of Nairn County, a club where he has spent a significant part of his career. The announcement comes after a period of uncertainty following the departure of former manager Ross Tokely in January.
Mackintosh, a club legend, expressed his honor at being offered the position, stating that he had not anticipated stepping into a managerial role so soon after his retirement from playing.
A storied career at Nairn County
Mackintosh’s journey with Nairn County began when he joined the team at the age of 20.

His leadership on the field was instrumental in the club’s achievements, and his return to Nairn in September 2022 marked a significant moment in his career, culminating in another North Cup win in November 2023.
Transitioning from player to manager
Although Mackintosh did not actively seek the managerial position, he was approached by the club for the role. Reflecting on the unexpected offer, he shared, “It came as a bit of a surprise to me, I’d decided to retire from playing and I was actually looking forward to having a break.” However, after considering the opportunity, he recognized it as a chance to fulfill his long-standing desire to enter coaching. His passion for the club and commitment to its success were key motivators in accepting the role.
Goals for the upcoming season
Looking ahead, Mackintosh is determined to elevate Nairn County’s performance in the Breedon Highland League, where the team finished 13th this past season. He believes that the squad possesses the potential to achieve better results and aims to foster a competitive spirit within the team. “For the quality we have at the club, I think we underachieved this season,” he remarked. Additionally, he expressed a desire for the team to perform well in cup competitions, aiming to bring silverware back to Nairn.
Mackintosh’s vision for the club includes not only improving league standings but also enhancing the overall competitiveness of the squad. He is optimistic about making strategic additions to the team that will bolster their chances of success.
