Introduction to the new toboggan ride

Cairngorm Mountain (Scotland) Limited (CMSL) has announced plans to construct the UK’s longest and highest toboggan ride, aiming for a summer 2026 launch. This thrilling new attraction is designed to enhance the mountain’s appeal as a year-round destination, offering visitors an exhilarating experience while enjoying the stunning Scottish Highlands.

Details of the toboggan track

The proposed toboggan ride will feature dual-rider sleds traversing a 1.2-kilometer track, reaching a peak elevation of 715 meters above sea level. This ambitious project is contingent upon securing planning and funding approvals, with an estimated investment of £1.2 million required.

The track will be strategically located within the existing ski infrastructure at the mountain’s base, utilizing an existing ski tow and integrating seamlessly with the mountain bike trails.

Seasonal operation and design features

Planned to operate from spring to autumn, the toboggan track will be constructed from lightweight aluminum, allowing for easy installation and removal within a two-week timeframe at the beginning and end of the snow sports season. The design includes twisting turns that will provide riders with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape as they glide down the mountainside. Additionally, the independent braking system will enable riders to control their speed, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for participants of various ages and abilities.

Community impact and future developments

This new attraction is part of the 25-year Cairngorm Masterplan, which aims to develop year-round activities for visitors. Once operational, the toboggan ride is expected to create additional full-time employment opportunities. CMSL has already seen success with other recent additions, including a gravity-style mountain carting experience and an enhanced playpark, which have attracted thousands of visitors in their inaugural season.

Expert insights on the project

Tim Hurst, interim chief executive of CMSL, expressed enthusiasm for the project, noting that summer toboggan rides are popular in regions like Austria, Switzerland, Germany, and North America, but this will be a first for the Scottish Highlands. Hurst emphasized the commitment to introducing a unique and exhilarating experience with minimal environmental impact, aiming to build on the success of existing summer activities and attract even more families to the area.
