Inverness doctor awarded £4.5 million after life-changing bike accident
In a remarkable legal victory, Dr. Daniel Gordon, a dedicated physician from Inverness, has been awarded £4.5 million following a catastrophic bike accident that left him with a severe spinal cord injury.

The incident occurred in August 2020 when the front forks of his high-end all-terrain bike failed, resulting in a crash that changed his life forever.

The accident and its aftermath

Dr. Gordon was riding his £2,300 Planet X Tempest SRAM Force 1 titanium bike on a grassy slope when the front forks sheared in two, causing him to fall and sustain a spinal cord injury.

This tragic accident left him paralyzed, stripping him of neurological function in his legs and trunk. Medical professionals informed him that he would rely on a wheelchair for the rest of his life, a devastating prognosis for someone who had dedicated his career to helping others.

Legal battle for justice

Determined to seek justice, Dr. Gordon initiated legal proceedings against the insurers of his bike, Arch Insurance (UK) Limited and Chubb European Group SE, after the manufacturer declared insolvency. His claim, originally set at £10 million, was based on the assertion that the carbon fiber forks on his bicycle were significantly weaker than those of comparable models. Expert testimonies during the court proceedings confirmed that the forks were materially thinner and less robust than expected, raising serious questions about the safety standards of the product.

A settlement and a new beginning

As the case approached trial, both parties engaged in negotiations, ultimately leading to a settlement of £4.5 million. This amount is considered to be 50% of the total claim value, but it includes provisions for Dr. Gordon to return to court for additional damages should he experience further complications from his injury, such as a spinal cyst. Despite the challenges he faces, Dr. Gordon has shown remarkable resilience, returning to work with NHS Scotland as a specialist respiratory registrar, where he continues to make a difference in patients’ lives.

Life after injury

In the face of adversity, Dr. Gordon has not only resumed his medical career but has also embraced new passions. He has taken up hand cycling, participating in events such as the hand cycling tour of Mallorca in 2022 and the London Marathon in 2025. His personal life has also flourished; he married his fiancée, Laura Colacino, in 2024, and they celebrated their honeymoon in Peru, visiting the iconic Machu Picchu.

A message of hope

Reflecting on his journey, Dr. Gordon expressed gratitude for the support he received from his legal team at Stewarts, who guided him through the complexities of his case. He acknowledged the pivotal role played by his friend and coach, Ewan Stirling, who first noticed the unusual failure of the bike’s fork. Dr. Gordon’s story serves as a powerful reminder that even in the face of life-altering challenges, it is possible to find hope and fulfillment.
