A 33-year-old man from Peterhead, Craig Neill, has been sentenced to nearly a decade in prison for a series of violent and sexual offenses against two women. The High Court at Livingston delivered the verdict, emphasizing the severe impact of Neill’s actions on his victims and the ongoing risk he poses to the public.

Details of the offenses

Neill was convicted of multiple charges, including coercive and abusive behavior, as well as serious sexual assaults, which included two counts of rape. The court heard that Neill’s behavior followed a disturbing pattern of manipulation, control, and degradation of his partners, isolating them from their support networks.

His actions were described as “toxic and manipulative,” leaving lasting emotional scars on his victims.

Legal proceedings and defense arguments

During the trial, Neill maintained his innocence, denying all charges despite the jury’s verdict. His defense counsel, Frances Connor, presented arguments regarding his mental health issues and history of substance abuse, claiming that these factors contributed to his behavior. Neill’s past included a serious head injury that led to a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which his defense suggested might have influenced his actions.

Sentencing and public safety concerns

Judge Susan Craig, in her sentencing remarks, highlighted the need to balance public safety with rehabilitation. She noted that Neill’s history of violence and the risk of reoffending were significant factors in determining his sentence. The judge stated that a lengthy custodial sentence was necessary to protect the public and to reflect the court’s disapproval of Neill’s actions. Ultimately, he was sentenced to a total of 13 years, with 10 years in custody and an additional three years under strict license conditions upon release.

Furthermore, Neill has been banned from contacting his victims for life and will remain on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely. The court’s decision underscores the serious nature of the offenses and the importance of safeguarding potential future victims from individuals who exhibit such dangerous behavior.
