The footballer was furious after the motion was rejected. His tweet read: “Paying close attention to the Commons today and to those who are willing to turn a blind eye to the needs of our most vulnerable children”.

The athlete was often praised by his followers for his attention to food poverty among children.

After Rashford announced he was ‘to oversee the FSM motion vote in the Commons on Wednesday’; he was immediately contested by Steve Baker, former Brexit minister and by Ben Bradley, MP for Mansfield, who responded with a tweet saying “extending freebies are a sticking plaster, not a solution”. Labour’s motion to extend free school meals until Easter 2021 was defeated by 261 votes to 322.

The FSM vote was called by the Labour party who had announced: “this House calls on the government to continue directly funding provision of free school meals over the school holidays until Easter 2021 to prevent over a million children going hungry during this crisis.”

According to Labour, almost a million children in England will be enormously affected by the lockdown and losing their free school meals will be devastating. Footballer Marcus Rashford who recently became an MBE in the Queen’s birthday honours list, responded to the Tory MPs’ tweets saying “1,5 million children have little to no access to food resources” and that he is only “asking to work together to protect our most vulnerable children”.
