Flood warnings as Storm Christoph continues

Storm Christoph continues battering England and the Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for heavy rain. More than 50 flood warnings were issued across the country and several rail services were cancelled. Simone Partridge from the Met Office has warned: “There are already parts of Cumbria that have seen over 80mm of rain since midnight on Tuesday and there’s a large number of places that have seen 50mm, and we are going to see further rain over the next 24 to 36 hours.”

Major incidents have already been reported in South Yorkshire and Greater Manchester for the heavy rainfall caused by Storm Christoph.

Sandbags were laid in at-risk areas and the Met Office has warned of ‘significant hazards’ as heavy rain will combine with melted snow and winds. Public Health England (PHE) has declared the risk of flooding will amplify the public health risks caused by the severe cold weather. Meteorologist Neil Armstrong: “Parts of central and northern England and Wales could potentially see a month’s rain in just 48 hours or so, with up to 200mm possible over higher ground, presenting a real flooding threat.”

Disruptions across the country include the Humber Bridge’s closure to vulnerable vehicles due to strong winds, rail services suspended in Wigan, Manchester to Liverpool, Preston, Buxton, Maryport and Carlisle due to flooding.
