London has been hit with 140,000 confirmed Covid cases in a week after they exploded by up to 500 percent among young adults and also increased among pensioners, an Evening Standard analysis reveals.
140,942 confirmed Covid cases were published in London during the week leading up to December 19.
This is more than three times the 42,455 cases in the first week of this month due to Omicron’s surge in the city. The actual number of infections is estimated to be significantly higher.
Health chiefs urge people who have not yet been vaccinated with Covid to get jabs and stress the majority of patients with Coronavirus in the city’s hospitals are not fully vaccinated.
Louise Bishop, consultant in health protection at the UK Health Security Agency London, said: “We do know that vaccines are our best defense and our data shows that getting the booster vaccine is more effective against this variant than two doses alone.”
The figures also showed that the minimum increase in the 7-day rates was less than 17% for children aged 5 to 14 years, but still a high rate of 1,152 and 890 children aged 10 to 14 years.
The 7-day infection rate for Londoners aged 25-29 increased by 501% in the week to 14 December, compared to 383 to 1 December, at 2,302 per 100,000 in this age group. Seven-day rates for Londoners aged 20 to 24 during this period increased by 455% to 1,846. For people aged 30-34, it has skyrocketed from 321% to 1,760.
