Driver shortages lead to mass cancellations affecting multiple routes

Inverness is currently facing a significant disruption in public transportation as Stagecoach has announced the cancellation of 50 bus services today. The sudden decision has left many commuters stranded, with the company citing “unforeseen circumstances” as the reason behind these cancellations.

This situation is not new for Stagecoach, which has been grappling with a persistent shortage of drivers for over a year, leading to widespread service interruptions.

Impact on bus routes

The cancellations have primarily affected several key bus routes, including routes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 16.

Among these, route three has seen the highest number of cancellations, with 12 services being pulled, while route one has experienced 15 cancellations. This pattern of disruption is alarming, especially considering that just last month, over 200 bus services were cancelled in a single week.

The situation worsened last week when 135 services were cancelled, including 43 on a single day, November 1.

Stagecoach’s response and future outlook

In response to the ongoing issues, a spokesperson for Stagecoach issued an apology for the recent service disruptions. They acknowledged the challenges posed by the driver shortage and emphasized their commitment to improving the situation. “While we’re making progress in recruiting drivers in Inverness, it takes time to complete their training,” the spokesperson stated. They assured the public that efforts are being made to operate as many journeys as possible with the current resources available. However, the timeline for recovery remains uncertain as the company continues to navigate these challenges.
