Gaza ceasefire talks continue as Israeli forces expand control

Egypt hosts ceasefire talks between Hamas and Israeli mediators as Israeli military operations intensify in Gaza.

Gaza ceasefire talks continue as Israeli forces expand control

The Israeli military has intensified its operations across the Gaza Stripresulting in at least nine fatalities and numerous injuries since dawn. This escalation coincides with Egypt’s efforts to facilitate a new round of ceasefire talks involving Hamas and other Palestinian factions, aiming to salvage a US-brokered truce.

The recent strikes have targeted various locations, including a police post near Khan Younis, the Zeitoun neighborhood in Gaza City, and a beach in Deir el-Balah. These incidents highlight the ongoing violence despite a pause in major fighting since last October, under a fragile ceasefire agreement.

Ceasefire talks in Cairo amid continued violence

Egypt is hosting discussions with Hamas and other Palestinian groups to revive the ceasefire agreement, which has seen limited progress. Hamas has emphasized the necessity of ending Israeli Attacks as a prerequisite for any meaningful advancement in the talks.

The negotiations, involving mediators from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkiye, are expected to span several days.

Since last October, approximately 947 Palestinians have been killed, and over 2,900 injured in continued Israeli attacks. Hamas fighters have also killed four Israeli soldiers during the same period. The Israeli military currently controls about 64 percent of the Gaza Strip, exceeding the 53 percent envisaged under the ceasefire agreement. This expansion has led to the displacement of Palestinians and the destruction of remaining buildings.

Stalled progress and key sticking points

The ceasefire agreement initially involved the release of captives by Hamas in exchange for some Palestinians detained in Israeli prisons. However, the transition to the second phase, which includes the disarmament of Hamas and the withdrawal of Israeli forces, has been stalled for months. Both parties remain at odds over key issues, particularly the disarmament of Hamas and the Israeli army’s withdrawal from the enclave.

Hamas has stated that it will not hand over its weapons until comprehensive discussions with other Palestinian factions are concluded. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has instructed the military to expand its control of the Gaza Strip to 70 percent, further complicating the ceasefire efforts.

Hamas accuses mediators of enabling Israeli escalation

Hamas has accused Nikolay Mladenov, the senior Gaza representative at the Board of Peace, of being responsible for the latest Israeli escalation. Despite ongoing talks, Israeli forces continue to target gunmen and conduct airstrikes, resulting in the deaths of civilians, including children. Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem has blamed both the Board of Peace and Mladenov for the escalation, deepening the dispute between the parties.

Indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas remain deadlocked. Hamas insists on the implementation of the first phase of the agreement, including the withdrawal of Israeli forces from occupied areas and the unrestricted entry of aid and commercial goods. Israel, however, is pressing for the disarmament of Palestinian factions as a central condition of the agreement’s second phase.

The diplomatic efforts come amid intensified Israeli operations, including strikes targeting members of Hamas’ armed wing, the Qassam Brigades, and Palestinian Islamic Jihad. The ongoing violence and the stalled ceasefire negotiations highlight the complex and challenging path to achieving a lasting peace in Gaza.
