Fish’s new chapter in life

Fish, the legendary frontman of the rock band Marillion, is making headlines as he relocates to the picturesque Isle of Berneray in the Western Isles of Scotland. At 66 years old, the musician, born Derek Dick, is ready to embrace a new lifestyle as a crofter, leaving behind his illustrious music career that includes hits like “Kayleigh” and “Heart of Midlothian.” This significant life change comes as Fish and his wife, Simone, fell in love with the stunning landscapes during a visit to an old friend.

A leap into crofting

In a recent interview with The Times, Fish shared the details of their move to a 35-acre croft, which includes a dilapidated house and a small flock of ewes. The couple’s decision was solidified after attending a ceilidh in a byre on North Uist, where Fish experienced a profound sense of belonging.

He recounted a memorable encounter with a girl named Kayleigh, further deepening his connection to the region.

Creative aspirations and new ventures

Fish expressed his desire to explore his creative side in this new environment. He hopes to write more, potentially crafting a novel or screenplay.

“As an actor, I’m limited, so if you want a role then write it,” he stated, emphasizing his need for artistic expression. Additionally, the couple plans to open a quaint cafe and bakery, aiming to create a cozy space rather than a commercial chain. “It won’t be Starbucks, just a couple of tables,” he noted, highlighting their intention to foster a community atmosphere.

Reflecting on a musical legacy

As Fish prepares for this new adventure, he is also wrapping up his farewell tour, titled ‘Road to the Isles.’ This tour has taken him across Europe, culminating in 15 performances in the UK, including two at Glasgow’s O2 Academy in March. Reflecting on his musical journey, Fish shared his gratitude for the support from fans, stating, “I’ve loved the gigs. It was the best I’ve sung for a long time.” However, he acknowledged the challenges of touring, particularly post-Brexit, which has made the logistics of performing more complex.

Despite the exhaustion that comes with touring, Fish remains optimistic about his future. “I need a new adventure in my life and this is it,” he declared, as he prepares to say goodbye to the music business. His move to Berneray symbolizes not just a change of scenery, but a complete transformation in his life, as he seeks to find inspiration in the serene beauty of the Scottish Isles. With a heart full of memories and a mind set on new beginnings, Fish is ready to embrace the next chapter of his life.
