A passenger's collapse prompts quick response from fellow travelers and staff.

In a remarkable display of quick thinking and bravery, an oil and gas worker, Alex Eaton, 44, successfully resuscitated a man who collapsed at Aberdeen Airport on January 25. The incident unfolded in the passport control queue, where the passenger suddenly fell to the ground, prompting immediate concern among those present.
Immediate response from bystanders
As panic ensued, calls for a doctor or medic echoed through the terminal, yet no one stepped forward initially. It was at this critical moment that Eaton decided to take action. He recalled, “There was a lady who had just started the process for chest compressions.
We thought he was gone, we were checking for vital signs.” His determination to help was soon joined by Border Force agents and other passengers, who rallied together to assist the stricken man.
The power of teamwork and medical equipment
Fortunately, a defibrillator was brought to the scene, allowing Eaton and his fellow rescuers to administer four shocks to the man. “Luckily, he came round after that,” Eaton said, visibly relieved. The teamwork displayed during this emergency was commendable, with everyone playing a role in the life-saving efforts. After the man regained consciousness, an ambulance was called, and he was transported to the hospital for further care.
Encouraging first aid training for all
Despite the successful outcome, Eaton remains humble about his actions, stating, “I was just glad to see it dealt with, it was a truly awful situation.” He emphasized the importance of being prepared for emergencies, urging others to pursue first aid training. This incident was not his first encounter with a life-or-death situation; he recounted a similar experience just six months prior during a five-a-side football match. “Believe it or not, this is the second time in six months this has happened!” he remarked.
Eaton’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the impact that ordinary individuals can have in critical situations. His willingness to step up when others hesitated highlights the need for more people to be equipped with the skills necessary to respond effectively in emergencies. As he aptly put it, “At the end of the day, if it was one of my family or friends then I’d want someone to have the courage to step up.”
The Scottish Ambulance Service confirmed that the man was taken to the hospital, though his current condition remains unknown. Aberdeen Airport has chosen not to comment on the incident, but the actions of those present undoubtedly made a significant difference in the outcome.
