In the heart of Aberdeen’s west end, a remarkable transformation has taken place in a one-bedroom apartment that beautifully marries period charm with contemporary luxury. Andrew Cowx, a 47-year-old paramedic and winchman for Offshore Helicopter Services, has spent the last two-and-a-half years turning this property into a personal haven.
His journey of renovation showcases not only his passion for design but also the potential of older properties when given a modern touch.
Embracing the charm of period features
Andrew’s journey began with a deep appreciation for the apartment’s original character.
“I had been renting in the west end and loved the local amenities and transport links,” he recalls. The kerb appeal of the property, along with the care taken by previous owners, drew him in. The first step in his renovation was to redecorate the living room, where he reinstated period features like the dado rail and wall panelling. Choosing a darker color palette, he created a cozy yet sophisticated atmosphere that reflects his personal taste.
Creating functional and luxurious spaces
One of the standout features of Andrew’s renovation is the transformation of a previously incomplete rear room off the bedroom. Initially a multi-purpose space, it was reimagined into a luxurious ‘bressing room’ that combines practicality with indulgence. “My partner wanted a space for a luxurious bath, but we also needed functionality,” Andrew explains. The result was the installation of four custom-built wardrobes, a utility cupboard, and a stunning free-standing bath that fits perfectly under the angled ceiling, creating a serene retreat.
Enhancing the exterior and overall functionality
Not only did Andrew focus on the interior, but he also upgraded the exterior of the property. The front garden was transformed with a new patio, bin store, and privacy hedge, enhancing both its appearance and functionality. The front door was refurbished, and extensive repairs were made to the building’s fabric, including the roof and rainwater goods. Inside, every room was redecorated, with the living room receiving the most significant makeover, featuring new panelling and a cohesive dark palette that ties the space together.
Despite the challenges of renovating an older property, Andrew found the process rewarding. “There were definitely frustrations, especially with the panelling in the living room,” he admits. However, the end result exceeded his expectations, creating a space that is both functional for daily living and relaxing for unwinding after a long day. The apartment now boasts a unique blend of original features and modern luxury, making it a perfect fit for anyone looking to enjoy the vibrant lifestyle of Aberdeen.
As Andrew prepares to move on to his next project, he reflects on his time in the apartment fondly. “It has been a joy to live in, and Hammersmith is a lovely street,” he shares. The property is currently on the market for over £240,000, offering potential buyers a chance to own a piece of Aberdeen that combines historical elegance with modern convenience.
