Revitalizing Peterhead: The future of the Carnegie Building
The historic Carnegie Building in Peterhead is on the brink of a significant transformation, promising to inject new life into the local arts and cultural scene. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance the Cultural Quarter in the town, which has been a focal point for community engagement and creativity.

Plans for a new cultural venue

Aberdeenshire Council has been actively seeking a new operator for the Carnegie Building since last summer. Originally constructed in the 1890s, the building has served various purposes, most recently housing the library and Arbuthnot Museum.

However, with plans to relocate these facilities to the refurbished Arbuthnot House on Broad Street, the Carnegie Building is set to become a dedicated arts and cultural venue.

Upcoming proposals are expected to be submitted to Aberdeenshire Council next month, detailing the envisioned renovations and programming for this cherished site. The anticipation surrounding the identity of the new operator has sparked considerable interest, with many speculating that it could be Scot-Art, a charity known for its commitment to urban regeneration and cultural initiatives.

Scot-Art’s potential involvement

Scot-Art has recently gained attention for its plans to revitalize the historic St Nicholas Kirk in Aberdeen, transforming it into a multi-purpose venue for entertainment and community support. During a recent planning meeting, charity leader Iain Sneddon hinted at the organization’s ambitions for a second venue in Peterhead, which could complement their ongoing projects in Aberdeen.

While details remain scarce, Sneddon confirmed that Scot-Art has secured a 20-year lease for a building in Peterhead, although the exact location has not been disclosed. This strategic move suggests a commitment to fostering cultural development in the region, with the Carnegie Building poised to serve as a creative hub for local artists, community groups, and entrepreneurs.

A hub for creativity and community

According to council documents, the Carnegie Building is envisioned as a vibrant space for cultural, recreational, and entrepreneurial exchange. The proposed operator aims to create a welcoming environment for various groups, charities, and start-ups, facilitating collaboration and innovation.

The plans include a diverse range of workshops, exhibitions, and events scheduled from 9 am to 9 pm, ensuring that the venue remains active and engaging for the community. Additionally, an application for funding to repair the building has been submitted to Historic Environment Scotland, with confirmation expected by summer.

The transformation of the Carnegie Building represents a significant step forward for Peterhead, aligning with the town’s vision of becoming a cultural destination. As the community awaits further developments, the potential for this historic site to become a cornerstone of local arts and culture is an exciting prospect.
