From Slow Food to Slow Fashion: sustainability in the Italian fashion industry

A new trend is afoot in Rimini as the “Slow Fashion” project takes inspiration from “Slow Food” and promotes sustainability and local economies.
What exactly is the fashion equivalent of slow food, you might be wondering? Well, take the idea of a bunch of nonna’s sitting around knitting and modernise it with some current philosophies taking root in a 2010, post-crisis world (we hope!).

At the Valgimigli Rimini University campus, in the Dress Redux laboratory, new ideas in the Italian fashion industry are being explored which include the relationship with material, the existential elements of knitting and sewing, and the political vision for fashion: eco-sustainability, hacking and social design.

The first “slow fashion” parade took place yesterday and if all goes well, the university should be able to find some businesses to partner in the project.
More concepts behind the project include: affection vs obsoleteness, vintage, recycling, customisation, handmade and DIY.
