A student from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh has created a new tartan to celebrate Scotland's enduring relationship with the United States, just in time for America's 250th anniversary.

The United States is preparing to celebrate its 250th birthday, a milestone that highlights both its rich history and its complex present. As the nation reflects on its journey, a unique tribute from Scotland has emerged, weaving together the shared history of the two countries.
Kaci McEwan, a student at Heriot-Watt University’s School of Textiles and Design in Edinburgh, has crafted a new tartan that symbolizes the deep historical and cultural bonds between Scotland and the United States. This design was chosen to commemorate the enduring relationship ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary and Scotland’s participation in the upcoming World Cup.
The Story Behind the Tartan
McEwan’s tartan is not just a piece of fabric; it is a narrative woven with threads and colors that represent pivotal moments in early American history. The design intricately reflects the United States’ path to independence, utilizing precisely numbered threads and distinct color sections to honor key historical events.
The tartan includes references to the original 13 colonies and the significant date of 4 July, the day the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776. McEwan’s design was selected from a competition commissioned by the Scottish Government, with US ambassador to the UK, Warren Stephens, serving on the judging panel.
A Celebration of Shared History
External Affairs Minister Stephen Gethins highlighted the importance of the tartan in celebrating the deep bonds between Scotland and the United States. “Scots were at the heart of the United States’ emergence as an independent country,” he stated. “Ever since, those deep bonds of family and friendship have endured, with a diaspora of millions across the US.”
Gethins further emphasized that the winning tartan commemorates significant moments in US history while showcasing Scotland’s creative drive. He congratulated McEwan on her outstanding achievement and commended all the shortlisted designers for their exceptional work in bringing this shared history to life.
The Creative Process
For McEwan, the tartan was a labor of love and a creative challenge. “I still can’t quite believe it,” she said, reflecting on her win. “When I first read the email, I genuinely thought it must have been sent to everyone and I’d misunderstood it.”
McEwan explained that her tartan was designed to tell a story, with every thread and color representing a moment in the journey towards the Declaration of Independence. “Being able to bring that narrative to life through weaving has been such an exciting creative challenge,” she shared. “To now have my work recognized on such an international scale is incredibly exciting.”
The tartan design serves as a modern symbol of the strong and evolving cultural ties between Scotland and the United States. As Scotland takes its place at the men’s World Cup, the Scottish Government will showcase the skills and expertise that the country can offer the US and the wider world.
