BMW issues urgent recall for 29,119 hybrid vehicles over engine starter fire hazard

BMW has announced a recall for nearly 30,000 plug-in hybrid vehicles due to a potential fire hazard in the engine starter. Owners are advised to park their vehicles outside until repairs are completed.

The National Highway Traffic safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced a significant recall involving BMW plug-in hybrid vehicles. The automaker is recalling 29,119 vehicles due to a potential fire risk associated with the engine starter. This recall affects several models, including the 2018-2026 BMW 530e xDrive2018-2026 BMW 530e iPerformance2017-2019 BMW 740Le xDrive and 2016-2018 BMW 330e iPerformance.

The issue stems from water potentially coming into contact with the engine starter’s electrical relay, leading to corrosion over time. This corrosion can affect the relay’s electrical connections and the engine’s ability to start. In severe cases, it may cause a short circuit and overheating, even when the vehicle is parked with the ignition turned off.

The NHTSA has warned that a short circuit in the starter relay may increase the risk of a fire.

Models affected and safety precautions

The recall was prompted by two field incidents: one involving a 2019 BMW 5 in November and another involving a 2017 BMW 3 Series in May.

Fortunately, no injuries or accidents have been reported thus far. However, as a precautionary measure, vehicle owners are urged to park their cars outside and away from buildings until the recall repair is completed.

BMW will send out owner notification letters on August 28, 2026 advising them to take their vehicles to an authorized dealer for the starter to be replaced free of charge. Owners who have previously purchased a starter replacement may also be eligible for reimbursement. The Vehicle Identification Numbers involved in this recall will become searchable on the NHTSA website beginning August 28, 2026.
