The Scope of the Recall
The recall covers a wide range of BMW sedans, including the F30 and early G20 3 Series, F10 and G30 5 Series, and F01/F02 and G11/G12 7 Series.
This extensive scope highlights the widespread nature of the issue, which was not limited to a single platform or generation.
The defective starter relay, identified by internal part numbers 0012820600 and 0012840600 has been a standard component across these models.

The Mechanism Behind the Fire Risk
The problem originates from a seal that fails to completely block moisture from entering the starter relay’s internal contacts. Once water infiltrates, it does not evaporate cleanly but instead sits against the metal, leading to corrosion over time. This corrosion can cause the contacts to short-circuit, generating heat that poses a fire risk in the engine compartment.
Drivers may notice symptoms such as hard or inconsistent starts a burning smell near the engine bay or dashboard warning lights related to the electrical system. BMW advises owners to seek immediate inspection if they experience any of these issues.
The solution involves replacing the entire starter motor, which eliminates the water ingress path altogether. This approach has been successfully used in previous recalls, including a related issue with the BMW X3 and a 2024 Volkswagen Jetta recall involving a different underhood component.

BMW has taken proactive steps to address the issue, with dealers set to notify affected owners and perform the necessary repairs free of charge. The recall is being monitored by the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA) under reference number 16791R.
