BMW's next-generation 3 Series has been caught on camera in Munich, revealing its design and features ahead of its official debut. The M350 xDrive model is the first to be spotted, showcasing the new sedan's striking similarities to the electric i3.
The automotive world is abuzz with the early reveal of the BMW 3 Series G50, as a near-production prototype has been spotted in Munich without any camouflage. This unexpected leak provides a clear look at the M Performance model, the M350 xDrive ahead of its official debut at the end of the month.
The new 3 Series, codenamed G50, is set to make its world premiere in late September, with the M350 xDrive taking center stage. The prototype’s quad exhaust system is a dead giveaway, distinguishing it from other models. However, it’s not the full-fat M3, as the flared wheel arches are notably absent.
The Design: A Familiar Yet Distinct Look
The new 3 Series shares a striking resemblance to the fully electric i3 despite the two models sitting on different platforms. The internal combustion engine (ICE) model sticks to the tried-and-true CLAR architecture while the i3 is built on the Neue Klasse platform engineered exclusively for EVs.
While the front of the car is not visible in the spy photos, the design is unlikely to stray too far from the i3. The Interior: A Radical Departure
The cabin of the new 3 Series is expected to differ significantly from the outgoing G20. Say goodbye to the iDrive rotary knob and most of the traditional switchgear. Instead, the new model will feature a radically different interior, similar to the i3.
The prototype spotted in Munich is the first 3 Series generation that BMW won’t build at its historic plant. Production is moving to Dingolfing, where the bigger 5 Series and 7 Series sedans roll off the assembly line. However, BMW sees the Munich-built i3 as a 3 Series model, so this statement may not be entirely accurate.
The Powertrain: A Range of Options
The new 3 Series will be available with a choice of petrol and plug-in hybrid powertrains. The M350 xDrive, with its turbocharged six-cylinder petrol engine and mild-hybrid system, is expected to be a popular choice. Lower down the order, expect entry-level 320 and mid-spec 330 models with a mild-hybrid four-cylinder petrol engine, plus a plug-in hybrid option or two.
At the other end of the spectrum, BMW will continue to offer a petrol-powered M3 alongside the electric model. It too will adopt a hybrid system, but unlike the new Audi RS 5, it will have a much smaller and lighter mild-hybrid system to help the existing S58 straight-six pass Euro 7 emissions laws.
