The UK is on the verge of approving the Wegovy Pill, a groundbreaking weight loss treatment that could change the landscape of obesity management.

The UK is poised to enter a new era in weight loss treatment with the imminent approval of the Wegovy Pill. This daily tablet, developed by Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordiskis expected to receive the green light from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in the coming days.
The Wegovy Pill is a tablet version of the highly effective once-weekly Wegovy injectionwhich has already gained popularity for its significant weight loss results. This approval would make the treatment a licensed medicine in the UK, potentially opening the door for millions more Britons to access this innovative weight loss solution.
The Shift from Injections to Tablets
One of the most significant advantages of the Wegovy Pill is its convenience. Many patients are currently deterred by the need to self-inject weight loss medications. According to polling conducted by digital healthcare provider Numantwice as many Britons would prefer a weight loss pill over a jab.
Around one in five patients considering weight loss medication are put off by a fear of needles.
Dr. Tsolmon Tsogbayar, senior clinical product lead at Numan, emphasized the importance of this shift. ‘The arrival of oral GLP-1 medication is hugely significant because it has the potential to make evidence-based obesity treatment accessible to a much wider group of patients who previously felt excluded from the current options available,’ he said.
Effectiveness and Mechanism of the Wegovy Pill
The Wegovy Pill contains the same active ingredient, semaglutideas the injection. Clinical trials have shown that obese patients on the tablets can lose up to 16.6 per cent of their body weight. While this is slightly less effective than the jabs, which can trigger up to a 20.7 per cent reduction for the highest dose, the convenience of a daily pill is expected to attract a broader audience.
The pill works by reducing the body’s appetite by mimicking a hormone in the gut that is released after eating. This process helps to reduce hunger and makes patients feel fuller for longer. According to Novo Nordisk, the pill is taken once a day on an empty stomach with a small amount of water.
The Future of Weight Loss Treatment in the UK
The approval of the Wegovy Pill in the US last December has already led to over 170,000 patients incorporating it into their daily routines. Novo Nordisk has highlighted the convenience of the pill as a key factor in its appeal. Mike Doustdar, the company’s chief executive, stated, ‘Patients will have a convenient, once-daily pill that can help them lose as much weight as the original Wegovy injection.’
While the MHRA’s approval would make the Wegovy Pill a licensed medicine in the UK, it does not guarantee immediate availability on the National Health Service (NHS). The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) would need to conduct its own appraisal before considering it for health service use.
Looking ahead, attention will turn to a rival pill developed by Eli Lillythe manufacturer of Mounjaro. Known as Orforglipron and marketed under the brand name Foundayo, this drug has also shown promising results in clinical trials. Patients taking the highest 36mg dose lost an average of 11.2 per cent of their body weight over 72 weeks. Approved in the US in April, a decision on its use in Britain is expected at a later date, offering more pill options to UK adults.
