Through his 2020 campaign trail, candidate Joe Biden made very clear he has a special bond with his family, his grandchildren, wife and kids, but people might not know he also experienced great tragedies.
Inside Joe Biden’s family
Biden had three eldest kids Hunter, Beau and Naomi with his late wife Neilia Hunter, then a younger daughter Ashley from his second wife Jill. He married his first wife Neilia Hunter in 1966, after welcoming their three children a terrible tragedy hit the family.
One year after their daughter Naomi’s birth, his wife Neilia took her to do some Christmas shopping, but they had a terrible car crash, leaving Joe alone with two kids to raise.
Jill
Joe and Jill got married in 1977 after they met on a blind date set up by a mutual friend, they had an immediate connection and after five more dates, Joe proposed received a big yes. Jill wanted to be sure of their relationship, as she had already been married and she was divorced at 24, also she was thinking about his sons, as she did not want them to lose another mother. They tied the knot and Jill raised the two sons as her own, before welcoming their daughter Ashley in 1981. Jill has been Second Lady for 8 years when Joe was Vice-President of United Stated during Obama’s administration.
Beau
Beau was Joe’s first son born in 1969, he was a law clerk before becoming a federal prosecutor. He was also awarded a Bronze Star for deployment in Iraq. Tragedy struck Biden’s family again when Beau died of brain cancer in 2015, just a year before his race for governor of Delaware.
Hunter
Hunter is the second son, born in 1970, he is the founder of a venture capital firm Eudora Global. He has three daughters: Finnegan, Maisy and Naomi, the latter was named after Joe’s daughter who died in 1972. Naomi graduated in 2016 at the University of Pennsylvania, alongside Donald Trump’s daughter Tiffany. Hunter struggled with substance abuse in the past and opened up about living with addiction. He was also talked about a lot by the media when he had a relationship with Hallie, his brother Beau’s widow.
Ashley
Ashley is Joe and Jill’s only biological child and was born in 1981, she did social work for over 15 years and became executive director of criminal justice reform-oriented non-profit Delaware Center for Justice. She founded her own fashion brand in 2017.
