Scott Rowan's family raises funds for life-saving surgery amid health crisis

Topics covered
In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Scott Rowan, a 33-year-old father from Oban, has been informed that the hole in his heart is “significantly larger” than previously thought. This alarming revelation has prompted urgent medical intervention to prevent the risk of a stroke.
Rowan, who has been unable to work as a commercial diver due to his condition, is now racing against time to raise £20,000 for the necessary surgery.
Understanding the condition: Patent foramen ovale
Rowan suffers from a patent foramen ovale (PFO), a condition characterized by a hole between the left and right atria of the heart.
While this hole is a normal feature in fetuses, it typically closes shortly after birth. In Rowan’s case, however, it has remained open, increasing his risk of serious health complications. The urgency of his situation is compounded by a family history of strokes, making the need for immediate action even more critical.
Family’s struggle and the path to treatment
Scott lives with his partner, Courteney Mclukie, and their two young daughters, Amber and Effie. The family’s life has been turned upside down by this diagnosis. Mclukie expressed the emotional toll this situation has taken on them, stating, “It feels like we’re living in a constant state of worry.” The couple had previously sought help through the NHS but faced delays and were ultimately forced to pay for a private consultation in Bristol. During this visit, they learned that the hole in Scott’s heart was larger than expected, heightening their fears.
Community support and fundraising efforts
In light of the urgent need for surgery, the family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise the necessary funds. Within the first 12 hours, they managed to raise over £7,000, showcasing the community’s willingness to support them in this challenging time. Mclukie emphasized that every contribution, regardless of size, makes a significant difference in their lives. Rowan expressed his gratitude for the outpouring of support, stating, “We are so grateful for how quickly people have donated.” The couple remains hopeful that with the community’s help, they can secure the funds needed for the surgery within the next six weeks.
Looking ahead: Hope for recovery
Despite the daunting circumstances, Rowan remains optimistic about his recovery. He is focused on staying fit and positive as he awaits the surgery that could restore his health and allow him to return to a normal life. The family is determined to navigate this challenging journey together, with the support of their community and the hope that soon, Scott will be able to embrace life fully once again.
